Fontana began as a farm town of citrus groves and poultry ranches, renamed from Rosena in 1913, and became a steel town after Henry J. Kaiser opened his mill on its outskirts in 1942. Route 66 still crosses the city as Foothill Boulevard, below the San Gabriel Mountains.
